At what point does the unthinkable become normal?
For a zine about herd behaviour, I wrote about Society of the Snow and the questions it leaves you asking about yourself.
The context
The Sheep Edition explored industry bubbles, echo chambers and the influences behind what we follow. My review took that theme into the extraordinary circumstances of the 1972 Andes plane crash.
My piece
What interested me was how carefully the film handled the survivors’ decisions. It gives you room to consider the morality of what happened, and how much of your own certainty might depend on never having been in their position.
If I wouldn’t make that choice myself, could someone else making it first change my mind? When a group’s understanding of what is acceptable shifts, where do you stand?
I don’t have a very satisfying answer. But I think that’s part of what makes it worth writing about.
My role
I wrote the Society of the Snow review for the second Left Field Report.
