Left Field Report — Film reviews
The publication
Left Field Report gave people across Keep Left room to explore a theme through their own interests and experiences. I contributed film reviews to its first two editions: Frances Ha for What’s My Age Again? and Society of the Snow for The Sheep Edition.
What’s My Age Again?
Frances Ha is about that uncomfortable stretch between technically being an adult and actually feeling like one. Which gave me quite a lot to work with.
For an edition questioning the assumptions we make about age, I wrote about growing up on your own schedule, the loneliness that can come with it and a dinner-party scene that made me want to disappear into my seat.
The Sheep Edition
The second edition explored the things we follow, from industry bubbles to the expectations of the people around us. I took that into the much less comfortable territory of Society of the Snow.
What interested me was how the film handled the survivors’ decisions without reducing them to a simple question of right and wrong. It made me think about how quickly a group’s idea of normal can change, and how confidently any of us can judge a situation we have never had to survive.
Beyond the page
The editions also supported industry round tables and panel discussions run by the agency. My contribution was the writing.
